"In May, it was confirmed there were 323 such buildings taller than 18m (60ft) in England that had unsafe cladding on them - including residential blocks and publicly owned buildings such as schools and hospitals.

"Of these, 311 were judged to be a fire hazard and unlikely to meet current building regulations.

"Work has started to remove the cladding from 107 of these but so far has been completed in only 10.

The wider problem now is the number of other buildings that have got this cladding - which was fitted in accordance with safety regulations - that need to have it replaced. Owner-occupiers of flats,just like owners of houses, don't necessarily have the money in addition to their mortgage payments to pay for the work.

Nobody broke any rules, so unless it can be proved somewhere down the line that someone who passed the material and the style of fitting it was negligent, the obligation to meet the expense isn't falling where it can be afforded. It's a big worry.

I was literally born into the building trade and I never heard of cladding catching fire. As a child I saw it on Welsh hillsides made of manure and straw,which you'd think was combustible.
