Light a candle

Lord - a friend is gravely ill and is not expected to regain consciousness and recover. I have no doubt you will already know his cheerful good humour, his wisdom, kindness and faith. Our thoughts are with his family, his wife in particular. It is sad and deeply worrying for them and for all his many friends. I pray for his peaceful passing and for your comfort for those who may soon be losing him. A life well lived that will be keenly missed here.

ALMIGHTY Everlasting God, who art Lord both of the living and of the dead,
and pitiest all those whom Thou dost foreknow to be Thine by faith and works:

We humbly beseech Thee that those for whom we have determined to offer our prayers,
both those whom this world yet holdeth in the flesh, and those already unclothed of the body, whom the world to come hath received, may by Thy goodness and mercy be counted worthy to attain pardon of all their sins, and eternal joys, through our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, One God, world without end. Amen.

The friend I mentioned is alive and has been showing a few minor positive signs, recognising family visitors, though his circumstances remain dire. But just as things started looking a little less awful hospital Covid precautions have cut in and no visitors are now allowed. So a desperately ill person can't get the sense of loved ones supporting them. Meanwhile the family are frustrated and upset at not being able to see him, even though they understand why. You will also know how hard pressed the nursing teams are just now, as they carry the weight of dealing with this development.

I suspect everyone reading this will have heard similar stories, or maybe you yourself are in that very situation. Please join me in praying for everyone in such trying times, for the necessary strength, patience and perseverance to deal with the frustrating restrictions and the lack of contact.

When I was myself in ICU a couple of years ago my addled brain dug out a number of memories which I found helpful - and you may like to incorporate this one in your prayers. You will recognise it, perhaps from Purcell's anthem "Rejoice in the Lord alway". That's where my memory discovered it.

"Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."
Amen.

Roger, you are right that many of us have been in the families position.

A good friend of ours was in Hospital, where he acquired covid. Spouse and family or friends banned from visiting. Eventually discharged to a care home, where the same rules were in place. Finally, when he was at the point of death his spouse and one son were allowed to visit. The son was permitted to stay until the very end.

When my spouse had a stroke on 6th July last year, I was not permitted to go to hospital with her, nor was I allowed visits, I only saw her through the ward door, but not able to touch or speak to her. First time we were able to touch was when I brought her home. She refused to travel in an ambulance. Having been transferred by an ambulance from the stroke unit to a rehab unit in a hospital very far from home, a journey, uncomfortable, which took two hours as they got lost.

I found it hard to cope and the hospital communications were extremely poor, I had to complain, long and hard to even find out what was happening. And eventually, my wife managed to phone me to come and collect her. The situation was and is distressing both for patients and families.

Prayers for all in this situation :votive1: :votive1:
