Advent Book Group 2016 - The Meaning is in the Waiting

Post by Pam » Tue Nov 08, 2016 12:26 pm

This year's Advent book group will be reading The Meaning is in the Waiting by Paula Gooder. This is available from your usual booksellers, and also on Kindle. Everyone is very welcome to join the group, which will meet in the chatroom weekly over Advent to discuss the book.

The four sessions will run on Tuesday 29th November, Tuesday 6th December, Tuesday 13th December and Tuesday 20th December, all at 8.15 pm.

Over Advent, the usual Tuesday Worship will be replaced by Advent evening prayers, starting at 7.45. This will be a simple reflective service and you are welcome to attend whether or not you are staying for book group.

Advent Book Group 2016 - The Meaning is in the Waiting

Synopsis from Amazon:
Advent is about learning to love the waiting…

Waiting is the primary lesson of Advent, says Paula Gooder. In the company of the biblical characters with whom the candles on the Advent wreath are traditionally associated, she helps us to discover very different kinds of waiting:

* Abraham and Sarah—who waited a lifetime for the fulfillment of God’s promises.
* The Hebrew prophets—who waited for God’s intervention, both longed for and feared.
* John the Baptist—whose ministry marked the end of one era and anticipated the new.
* Mary—whose life was shaped by waiting and by events beyond her control.

The Meaning Is in the Waiting is arranged for daily reading in the hectic run-up to Christmas. This thoughtful book will enable you to grow more fully into a way of being that is expectant rather than urgent, more focused on God’s presence right now than on some imagined future. You will venture on this journey in companionship with the God who waits with us.
Peace and blessings,
Joe

Amazon, about the author:

Paula Gooder is a writer and lecturer in biblical studies and is Theologian in Residence for the Bible Society in the UK.
She was born in Manchester, UK, where she grew up. She went to the University of Oxford where she did both her undergraduate degree and doctoral research (first at Worcester College then at the Queen's College). After that she taught for twelve years in two different colleges which train people for ministry (Ripon College Cuddesdon, Oxford, and the Queen's Foundation, Birmingham). Her research areas are 2 Corinthians and Paul's religious experiences.
In the end she left teaching in colleges because she realised that trying to juggle looking after children, teaching and desperately trying to write something was impossible. So she worked freelance for seven years before beginning work with Bible society. This involves teaching and lecturing to a wide range of different people and, at last, writing the many books that have been waiting to be written for a very long time. She continues to juggle but now only has herself to blame when it all goes wrong.
Paula's passion is to communicate to best of biblical scholarship to an audience that would otherwise not read it. She seeks to bring the Bible alive again for Christians for whom it has become over-familiar and stale.
