Good Books for Lent

Some years ago I went to a lent course that used 'behold your king' by richard holloway. Each chapter looks at the events around Jesus' death from the point of view of a different character involved in the story.

What do people Pray For?

I'm sorry, I failed to make it clear there that what I said was a question of belief. I "don't believe" in free will; I "believe" that everything is god's will. :) Those beliefs are like "physical laws" of my subjective reality. There is no reason why your subjective reality should have the same "p...

Playing God?

As a vet, I carry out euthanasia very regularly, sometimes several times a day. I would hate to have to do my job without it and leave animals who are suffering without being able to intervene. Sophisticated palliative care involving morphine drips etc as practiced for people would be prohibitively ...

What do people Pray For?

I'm not sure I can agree with you there. There is so much suffering and injustice in the world that I cannot believe that is how God wants it to be.

The details of who can and can't take communion vary from church to church but many churches expect some form of preparation such as baptism and confirmation. However most Anglican churches will be very happy for you to go to the altar with everyone else and receive a blessing if you are not receivi...

I thought the purpose of most inquiries was to buy time and hope the issue would go away but perhaps I've just watched too much Yes Minister!

Birds, Birds, Birds

I'm not very good at identifying birds, and they seem reluctant to use our bird table for some reason (maybe the cat staring out of the window is offputting...). However the other day I saw a very big bird with a forked tail flying over our house, and after consulting the bird book it must have been...

What do we want in a Church?

Perhaps we should ask what we need in a church rather than what we want, which might be quite different! For example, perhaps we might want to go to a church which is familiar and comfortable, but perhaps we might need to go somewhere more challenging. Some people might need a journey of visiting va...

Women in the Bible

"I am supposing that the teaching of bible is considered by Christians to be their way of life in anytime." I would agree completely with what Karen has said, that the Bible is central to Christians' understanding of God, whatever time or culture they live in, but that it is not a rulebook or manual...

Women in the Bible

Hi Hana, This could be a big discussion because the Bible is a collection of books written by people from different communities over many centuries so there are various bits of it which could be relevant to your question. I'm sure others will have plenty more to say, but my immediate thoughts are: 1...

My personal prayer life is much more chaotic than Ernest's sounds to be, I've always tried to be regular and disciplined about it but without much success. Before bed is probably the time I'm most likely to pray regularly, but it's not always every day. The morning would probably work better but som...

Hi Kevin, nice to meet you. Jae and Pam have said some really useful things so far. As a starting point in the bible, the gospel of Mark is quite short and a fairly straightforward narrative account of Jesus' life, so reading through that might be a useful start. With regard to prayer, I find the be...

It's interesting to hear you live near Bielefeld: my parents say we lived in Bielefeld for 6 months when I was a baby because my father was working at the university there (although my mum says people often assumed they were in the forces because they were British). Of course I don't remember it but...
