Signs of Spring

After a beautiful sunny weekend where I reminded myself what my garden looks like and found some snowdrops and crocuses coming up, this morning was more or less continuous blizzard, nice to look at but not nice to walk in.

Assasination

Hmm, interesting. Is this a similar debate to the 'just war' discussion? Any war, however good the reasons for fighting in it, will involve killing opposing personnel and civilians. Is this justified in the interest of a better outcome in the longterm? I don't know, and I'm really glad I'm not in a ...

Counting blessings three by three ...

Great question!
1. Bright sunshine at lunchtime (could almost feel some warmth in it).
2. My cat making me laugh by trying to steal my food constantly.
3. Teamwork and laughter with colleagues.

I'm sure it would be a great exercise to write down 3 blessings every day.

The way to the father

I could not possibly believe in a black and white policy of 'christians are saved (as long as they're 'proper' christians...) and everyone else isnt'. The gospel passage that has been mentioned seems to me to be open to a wide range of interpretations. Whether or not Jesus actually said the words th...

Thoughts for the season

I hope your operation and associated travel arrangements go well, and that you can adjust to having outside help with everyday tasks afterwards. It sounds like a very frustrating problem.

Could I have a prayer please

I had a situation recently where a friend/colleague at work who I got on well with moved out of the area. It was the right move for her and made her really happy so of course I was pleased for her, but I missed her a lot at first. Hardly surprising when we'd worked together every day for a couple of...

Big ( and Little ) Soups

I once had a few attempts at making soup but it always came out an unattractive grey colour, and didn't taste of much. Perhaps I should try again. :) Next time I have a few hours to spare...

What do we want in a Church?

Reading this discussion has made me consider why ordained clergy are important to me: I've almost always had positive experiences of clergy of all varieties, but that is not really a good argument as clearly others haven't. Clergy are human like anybody else and so the fact that they are sometimes l...

Signs of Spring

I like the sort of snow we're having today: makes things look pretty but doesn't stay around. The snow we had a few weeks ago was beautiful until I had to drive in it, and then it was just dangerous. I noticed today that the snowdrops have come up in the garden, they're currently a little hidden by ...

Church

I belong to my local parish church too but having been brought up in a lively city church I find the local church a little quiet and rural. I feel it's important to go to my local church so don't really want to be driving somewhere else on a Sunday, but belonging to i-church enables me to do somethi...

Lent "Fast" Support Thread

So, giving up chocolate, coffee, sweets, sugar,or an activity, are not, for most people, too hard, and I wonder if anybody out thre would be prepared to go the whole hog? I would have to take time off work if I was fasting completely as my job is physically active, and I already start feeling a bit ...

Godmother at a distance?

I'm about to become a godmother to a child who lives on the other side of the world. The christening is in London so that's not a problem but I just wonder if anyone has any thoughts/tips for how I can be a good godmother at such a distance?

What do people Pray For?

That sounds to me like a very desirable way of praying, along the lines of Jesus' 'Not my will but yours'. God knows what is best for us before we ask, and often what we want might not be what is best for us or for other people.

Crucifixion and resurrection

I think the resurrection is really what distinguishes Christianity from other faiths. After all, most faiths have great teachers and several have incarnate gods of various sorts. It seems very plausible that a man in the 1st century with a talent for drawing a crowd became threatening to the authori...

Lent activities - possibilities

The second life idea wouldn't be right for me as I get the impression it's quite complicated to get into second life and I haven't got time to get the hang of it. However if it will be useful outreach online then it might be right for i-church so don't discount it because of my technological limitat...

Emerging Christianity

This was an interesting article and certainly seemed like it could include i-church. However I didn't understand all of it. What did it mean by dualism? The only dualism I remember hearing of is the separation of the spiritual and the earthly, is that what was meant or is there another meaning? And ...

Nothing beats Nutella for me!

Peanut butter is also good.
My mum always used to make savoury pancakes, with some sort of casserole-type filling, on Shrove Tuesday.

Who crucified Jesus?

Historically there was a tendency to blame specific historical figures or groups of people (at one time I believe this was a factor in anti-semitism) which is probably not very helpful. God does not see the world as we do. For example, time is not a limiting factor for him. So it seems quite possibl...

If you went to Church today ....

That's great Jae, I'm glad you enjoyed it overall. I've served for many years and I was taught exactly what Pam says: as long as you look dignified, nobody will notice if you make a mistake. It's a motto that has been very useful! I haven't served for a month or so as I was tending to feel dizzy whe...
